Dance styles

You didn't quite understand why the ranking on the competition was different from your expectations? The competition is not a regular performance, the jury evaluates things that are maybe not important under other circumstances, the jury respect many rules. While you choose your category, we prepared the basic description of some of them, including the most suitable costume. It would by a pity to lose points when it is not necessary.

Classical Oriental Dance, Raks sharqi, Mejance

Dance to classical oriental music which should include at least two different rhythms. Dance tool such as a veil, silk fans, Wings of Isis and such are allowed although this part should not be longer than 1/3 of the whole performance. If the track will include a drum solo, this part also should not be longer than 1/3 of the performance. Costume: Two parts or a dress with a decoration in style of a 2 part costume

Drum solo (as a part of Classical Oriental Dance)

Oriental dance accompanied by music that is created only by drums.

Costume: two-part costume or dress with a decoration in style of a two-part

Tarab (as a part of Classical Oriental Dance)

This term expeses spiritual extasy, which is connected to love ballads from the golden era of oriental dance among dancers. Dancers therefore should not dance to slow modern oriental pop for example.

Costume: two part or dress, galabeya

Improvisation with orchestra

Dancers will not be informed in advance about the songs which will be used. If the dancer want to use a prop, we recommend veil although the dancer should not use it during the whole performance (estimated length is 3 to 5 minutes). Recommended for Profi and Semiprofi.

Costume: two part costume or dress with two part costume decoration

Beledi and Beledi Shaabi

Traditional and modern Baladi, Taqsim Baladi and more free interpretation Beledi in style of Shaabi.

Costume: modern – stage or cabaret Beledi – can be danced also in two part costume. In other cases use galabeya.

Shaabi and POP (in Arabean language)

All styles of shaabi: adaweya, mahragan or film-modern, but not beledi shaabi, pop songs only in Arabic.

Costume: Characteristic costume for this dance style (it means also „common“ clothes adapted for stage performance), galabeya, in pop songs, if their style makes it possible, also two-part costume or a dress with the decoration of a two-part costume.
